It's the End of the World and We Know It...
Will DC get destroyed by fire or ice, Anti-Valentine's Day, and Jerry Springer throws his hat out there
UPDATE, 4PM Accu-weather is now calling for 16+ inches of snow over the weekend for the DC area. It's all over folks, time to start looking for a new capitol! The biggest blizzard of the century thus far and I'll be out of town. I'm not sure if I should be sad or happy... :) Well, anyway, off to the airport!
Well, folks, I think it may finally be over. The DC metro area may have met it's match. First we have the terror warning, which is apparently still valid despite reports of bad information, and the threat level may actually be increasing. And then...snow. And no, not the dusting to an inch the area has finally gotten used to, or the 2 inches that used to close schools but now barely gets noticed. We're talking a big puppy, 3 days long, with ice and snow and all sorts of goodies mixed in. I'm sure that soccer moms are attacking the trucks as they pull in to the Giant, and toilet paper probably is worth more than gold on the street.
Two quick observations from my way into work this morning. While it has clouded over now with the approaching storm, this morning the skies were quite clear...except for the dozen contrails in the sky from the fighter jets patrolling back and forth over the city. Also I noted that the traffic was light, and the radio said this as well (guess the combo of Vday, the Monday holiday, and the threat of imminent destruction kept some folks home today). So the only traffic tie ups...were from flower trucks blocking the road while they delivered their wares.
Yes, Valentine's day is upon us. If you've been following this week's issues, it will come as no surprise to you that I greatly dislike this holiday. Below you'll see the last of my anti-valentines, culminating in the best anti-valentine ever written, I highly recommend it. For those of you who have asked, my annual gift will be a trip this weekend to San Francisco. For those of you new to this, annually I spend an amount of money on myself in proportion to the national average someone spends on Valentine's day. This year, it's taking me out West, so instead of just spending the evening with Mr. Jack Daniels, I'll be spending the evening with Mr. Jack Daniels and satellite TV at 35,000 feet!
So as the snow and ice begin to fall and l make my way out of town for a few days away from all the madness, a few quick notes. While the Swamp usually wouldn't appear on Monday, I may go ahead and give you a special edition from the West Coast, and I will be publishing as normal from the Bay Area on Tuesday. So enjoy your weekend, and those of you in the DC area stay safe and enjoy shoveling your way out of a foot of snow!

Panic in DC: Apparently the terror alert was partly based off of some bad information. But the FBI is still tracking Al-Queda operatives in the states -

But one source says the situation is much more serious, and that a "severe/red" level threat may be issued today (Officials yesterday denied this), and that officials are being told to send their families out of town. Bill Frist said today this was untrue, and he felt very safe at the Capitol building. A "Severe threat" means that an attack is imminent or taking place -

In the San Francisco Bay Area, most residents are calm, and watching the panic on the East Coast with some fascination. It is noted however, that most Californian's already have emergency supplies stocked away for earthquakes, so there's no real big sense of urgency -

Look Who won't be Voting for President: The DC State Democratic Committee rejected a proposed January 2004 DC primary, which pretty much kills the proposal. The most interesting thing is the speculated reason for the rejection: That Al Sharpton would probably win it. Um...folks, it really is beginning to look like the Democrats have a "Sharpton" problem. He's not going to win, but he could show up in Boston with 20% of the delegates...and then demand a prime-time speaking role. This will be interesting to see how this develops, and how it is handled by the Dems, who seem scared of it. -

Look Who's Running for the Senate: Jerry Springer actually gave a serious policy address at Miami University of Ohio yesterday. After taping an episode of his show entitled "I'm Kissing My Cousin." Before you dismiss this out of hand, I heard Springer speak at AU a few years ago, and I think he may have this in him...after all, if Jesse Ventura can be elected Governor... -
